FIVE-SET MATCH

FINCHER MOST IMPRESSIVE

DEADLY SMASHING BY HUNG

TSUI WAI-PUPS FINE STRATEGY

(By "BASE-LINE ")

Tsai Wai-pui achieved the covet- ed lawn tennis "double" yesterday at the H.K.C.C. when he and his brother Tui Yan-pni won the Colony Doubles Championship by beating E. C. Fincher and W. C. Hung by scores of 6-8, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. He won the Singles title last Monday when he beat H. D. Rumjahu in straight sets.

The "double" has been achieved by only two other players, both of whom witness- ed Tsui's triumph yesterday— Ng Sze-kwang (1918, 1919. 1922 and 1923) and Sirdar Rumjahn (1927, 1982, 1933 and

1935).

Yesterday's Final was a disap- pointing one in almost every res Ipect, the standard being poor and not being helped in the least by the unusually late decisions of one

of the service linesmen.

ex-

Lack Of Understanding * The Tsuis were the more specta- cular combination-the phrase is not very apt under the circum- stances-and fully deserved their success, but they did not give the impression that they were barking on a long list of successes such as the Rumjahn cousins re- corded from 1925 to 1935. Times without number they clashed when attempting a return, and had their opponents devoted more attention to relaras down the centre of the court they would have done con- siderably better. As it was they concentrated mainly on the side- lines, and this suited the two in dividuals opposing them.

*WES

Tsui Yan-pui's lobbing was gel- dom deep enough and

in- variably "killed" by Hung or tuck- Jed away to advantage by the more cautious Fincher. The younger Toui was also disheartened by several blunders overhead early in the match and from the second set onwards he rarely took full ad- vantage of any weak return by the opposition. His volleying sound, while his ground shots were Iwell under control throughout. His service, however, was his main asset he won one game with four aces.

Champion's Strategy

was

Tsui Wai-pui failed to reveal his best form at any period of the match, although he brought off įseveral extremely well judged lobs. His drop shot_proved a failure against the quick witted Fincher and it was surprising that he per- severed with it as long as he did. It must, however, be said that it was the champion's generalship that won the match-he' was never

slow to take full advantage of any · temporary lapse on the part of

either of his opponents and that weakness was attacked with dour determination.

Teddy Fincher was until the

last set-when the light became a little difficult the most impres-

sive player on view. He staged a welcome comeback on the occasion

ах ве-

of his fourth unsuccessful appeár- ance in a Final in the last five years, his volleying being crisp and well placed, while his ground shots and lobbing were cuzate as could be desired. In the fifth set, Zeeling the effects of a long-drawn-out struggle and being unable to see as well as he might in the poor light, he lost his grip on the game and with that the KC.C. partnership collapsed like a pricked balloon,
