SOLDIERS LATE RALLY
Athletic were featured in a splendid dis- play against the Fusiliers in their premier League soccer match at Caroline Hill yesterday, playing almost throughout with only 10 men, gaining a two-goal advantage, and then being forced to a draw in the closing stages, the Fusi- liers netting twice in the last 10 minutes.
The final result hardly gives a true indication of the game. - With only 10 men opposing them, and being presented with un- limited scoring chances, the Fusiliers should really have gained a comfortable win. Yet the best moves came from the Athletic; they had but two genuine chances, and scored from both. They

ents, and must consider themselves rather unlucky to come away with one point after playing so pluckily.
The Fusilier defence failed to find their form until nearly the end. Miskicks and faulty positioning were among the many errors committed by Wheeler and Keating, and it is a long time since these usually so réliable backs have played so much below form. Keating let in both of the Athletic goals, partly through endeavouring to bundle his opponent off the bail rather than tackle him.

(By “Scrum-Half”)~-~- LTHOUGH the Colony Rugby selectors over-
came the full-back problem to the satisfac tion of all, two weaknesses are apparent in the choice of the backs for the return match against the New Zealand Universities fifteen next Fri- day. St. Clair Ford has passed his prime and either, McGilchrist or Lt. Fraser, preferably the latter, would have been a more popular choice, while I would have preferred either Lt. Hamilton or Bonnar, despite their obvious slowness, to Preece behind the serum. The Navy scrum-half is too apt to become offside and is a definite menace in his own "25.

Twice on Saturday St. Clair Ford was given a clear run for the line and yet was grassed on both occasions by Floyd, who also passed him with every degree of confidence in two runs that reminded us of those made by both New Zealand wing three- quarters on their last visit here. As an attacking unit St. Clair Ford has been disappointing this season, and in defence he is too uncertain to regain his lost laurels against the New Zea- Landers. Butcher, who will have to be in better form next Friday than he was on Saturday, would probably have fared best with Hamil ton at the base of the scrum-it was a pity the selectors did not change Freece at the interval in order to see how he and Butcher fared.
The selected forwards are probably as good as are available, though I am sorry a place could not be found for Lt Bobinson, who is more than useful in the loose. In passing, though it has nothing to do with the selection of the Colony side, I should re All Sunday cricket and temis to mention Stan Garrod's fine display on Saturday. with little was ruined yesterday owing to the hope of inclusion, owing to his reputed lack of stamina, he played in which fell on Saturday night a fine, constructive game in the loose and clearly showed that he and continued until the early hours is no back number.
