"UNOMEE UPHELD IN SELECTION OF CLUB XI

JACK RODGER BEST

LEFT-HALF

MCGUBBIN PREFERRED

TO HAMILTON

"INTERPORTER'S SAD LAPSE!

ITo The Editor, “China MxIT"],

SIR, "Unomee's" eclectic eleven and "Inter- porter's" comments thereon intrigued me greatly. On the whole I am with "Unomee." As he emphasised, Jack Rodger was of most value at left-half: there was no question of his being superior or inferior to his brother as a goalkeeper.

I think "Interporter" was correct in substituting McCubbin for Hamilton. Previous to 1910, when each was at his best, there was, in my opinion little to choose between these players, but after 1910 A.T. faded away. Td leave "Unomee's" half-back line intact. As a real classy footballer Railton was nowhere near Jack Rodger.

Manning Railton, than whom the Club never had a more enthusiastic trier, was at his best just before he went to the war, and even then he was never much more than a glorious basher, who went into the tackle like a typhoon. He was destructive, not constructive, with poor ball control, and against a wily for- ward like Forsyth his bull-like rushes would, more often than not. have carried him well past both ball and man.

Like McCubbin, Rodger wasted no energy, and, unlike Railton, he could," when the Club pressed, become a sixth forward and score goals. He could also propel the ball with his head to the wing or centre almost as well as Stewart could, an asset Railton never possess

In any case G. Rodger, in
