London, November 25. GRAND game, and, on the whole, the better side won. That was how we felt at Murray- field on Saturday, when New Zealand had beaten Scotland by three goals and a try (18 points) to a goal and a try (8 points). A little hard on Scot- land, perhaps, and standing there afterwards in the gathering dusk, trying to sort out our impres- sions, we wondered what would have happened if Murdoch, the Scottish left centre, had not been injured during the first half.

Vain speculation. maybe, but these are the facts. Scotland had drawn first blood with an unconverted try, and then Murdoch had to leave the field for ten minutes with slight concussion. New Zealand scored immediately after he went off, and when he returned he remained on the wing until the interval, obviously shaky, with Fyfe in the centre. While Scotland's defence was thus disorganised New Zealand scored twice more, but in the second half, with Murdoch in the centre again, each side scored
