JAPANESE ARMY WILL BACK NORTH CHINA UNITED PROVINCE
SACRED ABYSSINIAN
RELIC SAFE
AT ARMYHEADQUARTERS AT DESSIE
NEGUS EXPECTED TO LEAVE CAPITAL
-CHINA MAIL" SPECIAL
Addis Ababa, To-day.
The sacred relic, which the Abyssinians claim to be the original "Ark of the Covenant of Israel' and which they venerate as the greatest national treasure, has now been transported to the army headquarters at Dessie, and great satisfaction is felt here at the news of its safe arrival.
It was immediately placed in a bomb-proof dugout, where it is guarded day and night by soldiers and Coptic priests.
According to an old Abyssinian tradition the sacred relic which is usually preserved at St. George's Cathedral at Addis Ababa, is always transferred to the Negus's headquarters when the country is threatened by hostile invasion, and it is therefore assumed that the Emperor's departure for Dessie is imminent.
About 10,000 Abyssinian warriors of various tribes and of both the Mohammedan and Christian religions are reported to have passed through Dessie after a difficult march of more than 300 kilometres, continuing their journey to the northern front with renewed enthusiasm after having been in the vicinity of the national sacred relic.
