The first session of the Fascist Grand Coun- cil, assembled on the eve of the beginning of sanctions at 10 p.m. on Saturday, was attended by all the prominent members of the party, in- cluding the Ambassador to Great Britain, Signor Grandi, and Marshal Balbo, and lasted till one o'clock in the morning, but the members remain- ed together in the Palazzo Venezia until three o'clock discussing the situation exhaustively.

night. At the opening of the session the President of the Senate, Signor Federzoni, read out a declaration that all Italians have unconditional confidence in the work of the Duce and are prepar- ed to make any sacrifice to reach their goal. This declaration was carried with acclamation. Signor Mussolini then made a re- port on the situation of Italy's position on the eve of the sanctions. Finally the Grand Council passed a 7-clause motion to the

FRENCH PRESS COMMENT

SPECIAL

Paris, To-day.

The Sunday papers deal at length with the policy the British Government is likely to adopt as regards sanctions now that the election has resulted in a sweeping majority for the National Government.

The general conclusion is that as the Government's success at the poils was largely due to Mr. Baldwin's League of Nations policy, the British Government will adhere more than ever to the line hitherto taken, if not even proceeding to make the mea- sures against Italy more severe than ever, if the sanctions com- ing into force-to-day do not prove effective enough.

The semi-official: Excelsior expresses satisfaction that the French Premier will again take up the threads of reconciliation. because after the elections England will base its foreign policy more than ever on the League of Nations and will adhere more tenaciously than before to the Policy of sanctions.

Madame Tabonis in F'Oeuvre writes that the chief party to profit from the outcome of the English elections is the League of Nations, because if England. were today to call on the Do- minions to take part Euro pean war it would beyond any An appalling picture of the doubt meet with a refusal.
