ITALIANS CLAIM GENERAL ADVANCE

ALONG 50-MILE FRONT

-CHINA MAIL" SPECIAL

Addis Ababa, To-day.

A renewed violent bomb attack was made on the southern front yesterday by two Italian squa- drons. About 1,250 bombs were dropped, caus- ing the deaths of 30 women and 15 children, ac- cording to reports received here.

A message from Rome states that the first reports on the advance on Makalle appearing in the Italian press yesterday even- ing show that considerable progress was made in the course of the day, the vanguard having reached Addiabbi, 90 kilometres south of Hauzien and 40 west of Makalle, while the left wing is now at Agula, 35 kilometres to the north-east of Makalle. With the exception of a few isolated skirmishes, the Italian troops en- countered no resistance.

New York, To-day.

The silver market and the Far Eastern ex- changes have only been slightly disturbed by the Chinese monetary reforms, which are generally regarded as largely the result of the United States silver policy. Local bankers and foreign exchange circles offer little immediate comment on the situation, the general inclination being to watch for further developments.

"Nevertheless the impression is that the steps taken will not necessarily mean inflation, although it is realised that much de pends on the degree of success with which China will be manag- ing the new unrency. At the same time there is some`scepti- cistmas to whether the Government will be able to carry out the nationalisation order effectively.

Silver circles agree that the action might eventually turn out to be a bullish factor in the silver market, which is likely to strengthen under the influence of the restricted silver exports..
