Heavy gas. consumption, and technical difficulties of flying in the stratosphere will make flying in the upper air lanes a practical impossibility, in the opinion of Col. Roscoe Turner, the American airman who holds the transcontinental speed re- cord of 10 hours 2 minutes. He recently visited this city.
In stratosphere fiying the cost becomes too great for commer- cial fixing, as motors have to be supercharged and the cabins made airtight, Colonel Turner explained. He predicted that a medium will be established be- tween the stratosphere and the present air lanes where commer- cial planes can
operate economi-
cally. The average speed for these commercial planes will be between 250 and 300 miles

DECLARED FASTEST IN WORLD
ORDERED FOR EMPIRE
ROUTES
CRUISING RANGE OF 1,000 MILES
AN-order for a fleet of new flying-boats for the
main Empire lines has been placed by Im- perial Airways.
They will be capable of a speed little short of 200 m.p.h, and will have a range up to 1,500 miles, according to the fuel and load to be car- ried. They will thus be larger and faster than any aircraft in service on Imperial Airways routes, and will be in advance of any similar craft in the world.
➡
All previous marine aircraft on Empire routes have been of biplane.construction, but the new boats will be of the unbraced high-wing monoplane type, with wing-up floats. They will have a span of 114ft, an over-all length of 881⁄2ft, and a height on the beaching chassis of 291⁄21⁄2ft.
Their total loaded weight will.
