MAX BAER NEVER HAD A CHANCE AGAINST “BLACK MENACE”

WORLD BASEBALL

SERIES TO-DAY

CUBS AND TIGERS TO MEET IN DETROIT

CHICAGO ARE FAVOURITES THE 1935 World Baseball Series opens to-day

and the first two games will be played in the American League Park, the home of Detroit Tigers, winners of the American Baseball League Pennant, while the next three games will be play- ed on the home field of the National League Pen- nant winners, the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs, with their astounding streak of 21 home „successes, are favoured for the title. They are regarded as the wonder team of modern baseball. Only one other team had won so many home games in a row, the New York Giants, who in 1916 reeled off 26 victories at the Polo grounds.

Sports writers, however, are of the opinion that much can happen yet and the World Series pennant will never be in the hands of the Cubs until they have won four of the seven games they must play.

NY., Sept. 24. SLEEK Joe Louis, panther-bodied Detroit Negro, to-night knocked out full-shouldered Maxie Baer of California in the fourth round of a million-dollar prize fight after smashing the bloody ex-world's champion to the floor thrice.

Ninety thousand rabid fight followers nearly wrecked Yan- kee Stadium as. 2 minutes and 50 seconds after the bell rang for the fourth. Louis cornered the champion and "let him have it.**
