TREASURES
Matter Declared Non-Dutiable
IMMENSE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL
The entire lot of historical ind- ings and scientific matter which Dr. Sver Hedin, Swedish explorer, [scientist."" writer, and guiding genius of many expeditions in Central Asia, recently had shipped from the port of Tientsin to Stock- holm, have been pronounced non- dutiable, according to the Swedish Cosal in Tientsin, Mr. E. R Long.
The total of 41 cases exported represented the final instalment of Jan immense among of material, the assembled results of patient research of Dr. Hédin and his staff, of assistants during the past seven or eight years.
Fossil Rocks
There were seventeen cases of fossil rocks and seven cases of miscellaneous archaeological speci mens which are to be returned to Chins after expert cataloguing and labelling by specialists in Sweden. There were also eight cases of zoological and six of geological samples. originally considered to be dutiable. The small number of three cases represented the per- sonal effects and equipment of Dr. Hedin and his associates.
Earlier Announcement
It was announced at the time of actual shipment several weeks ago, that fourteen cases were subject to duty and duty was paid to the Tientsin office of the Chinese Maritime Customs, since the rul
ing from high oficials in Nanking.
notwithstanding representations made to them some time previous-
ly reached Tientsin after the cargo had not only passed through the Cptoms but was already on board the Tamara, a Swedish freighter bound for Stockholm, Goteborg.
