BRIDGE NOTES
Under-Bidding For Safety
By Ely Culbertson
While Duplicate Bridge, when played in the form of team-of- four tournaments with cumulative scoring, is a great test of skill, at times it leads to strange varia- tions from what is ordinarily can-| sidered good Bridge. I once play- ed in a tournament in- which my partner and I deliberately refus fed to bid a vulnerable Small Slam which we thought that we could probably make. In effect this underbidding, is ja safety measure. In the case I 48 speak of we had completed boards of a sixty-board match. At the end of the forty-eighth we were leading by 1,700 points, and the next eleven hands were of the dull type in which no more than [a part-score can be bid and there is little opportunity to gain or lose more than 50 or 100 points. On the last deal we were vulner- able and knew that we were still
at least 1,500 points ahead. We picked up the following cards, I being the South` player.
