-I've had enough lip from you. hane. Keep your mouth shut from zow GIL An angry flush had come to
bas weathered cheeks in all the years they had known each other, Kane could not! recall a row with this man, Irvine!
2 close friend of Kane's mother, who was never more pleas- ed' inan, when Kane brought him to stay with them at their Berk- shure nome Kane's young sister, Claribel, was inclined to be roman- te about hum-Kane realised that as they were planning this trip. Ar unreasoning rage swept him now that they should be fighting when they each of them wanted! everything they had got to win, through.
"Who are you to tell me to keep my mouth shut** he shouted back. "You haven't, the guts to keep yourself awake. You-a pilot! Don't make me laugh." For a mo- ment Irvine's great hands worked, bunching themselves. "When I've landed this crate." he said, "I'm going to step up to you and sock you. Maybe 1' catch some- thing from hitting you, but I don't!
care.
-You should have a chance t bitting me before worrying about! that... You talk pretty big, don't you, Irvine? If I couldn't lick al big, fatfooted softie like you, I'd

trailed off. "Oh let's forger it,”: he yawned, and, hunching his shoulders over the wheel, stared abead at his instruments.
Kane, seething still, became con- scious. that he had forgotten about sleep. He was vividly awake. It was then that the, idea came to bim. The flare-up between them had carried the many miles nearer their goal. Insults had roused Irvine where coffee, tablets, i and everything else had failed.
"That's it! Let's forget i£**; he began anew. "What I would i have expected from you.”
The man at the wheel shook his bead
wearily. "What dyou
mean?"
"You never could finish any thing you started.”
"No? What have I started that you know I've not finished ?**
For half an hour Irvine carried
it on, fighting every inch of the ground, Kane raked up from the Twice the pilot went to past, sleep. and twice Kane slapped him 'back to consciousness. As they drew nearer to Sydney, even- în-: sults began to lose their barb. Kane searched his mind for things to hurt him.
The third time Irvine fell for- ward over the controls. Kane grew desperate
"You better keep awake, Irvine, for the next few minutes!" he warned. "I've got something to tell you before we reach Sydney— if we do."
"I don't want to hear anything from you, Kane. Now, or ever.”
"You'll listen to this," Kane in- sisted quietly, "if have to break your jaw."
"You? That's good!”
"Tve known a good many years now, Irvine, the sort of low hound you were with women. But I didn't bring this particular busi-! ness up before as I didn't want to wash this trip up.”
He saw it take effect on the pilot. With these big men, shy with women, and carrying into manhood chivalrous, schoolboy ideals, he knew that, there was one sure way to get under their skin. With Bill Irvine, though, it was a shame to do it.
"If your private life's just about as rotten as it can be." Kane in- xisted, “that's your own affair, ali though it's the sort of thing that makes most men sick.”.
"I'm going to knock your fool little head off!”
Not until I've had this out, with you." The navigator figured that twenty minutes would see them at Sydney. "Up to a month ago I didn't care what you did; But when a man can't draw the Tine at decent, womenfolk, even when he's stopping as your guest, in your mother's house, the time's
