LESSONS OF THE FIRST TEST
WHAT
(By. HOWARD -MARSHALL)
London, June 22.-
are the lessons of the first Test match? Rather mixed, I think, like the match itself. One, at any rate, is that unless the weather intervenes it will take better bowl- ing or faster scoring to avoid drawn matches at Lord's, Leeds and Manchester.
Lord's, perhaps, is an exception to this rather sweeping. statement, for there the wicket is uncertain. The point is that, on the whole, the bowling at Trent Bridge was indiferent. Certainly neither the England nor the South African attack seemed likely to dispose of a strong hatting side-on an easy wicket twice in three days.
BUT NICHOLS, YOU MAT EXCLAIM, SURELY NICHOLS BOWL- ED WELL? 30 HE DID. VERY WELL, INDEED, BUT IT IS UNDENI- ABLE THAT FIVE OF HIS VICTIMS WERE IN THE LOT ER HALF OF THE BATTING ORDER, AND UNNECESSARILY SCARED BY A RAIN-AFFECTED FITCH. NICHOLS IS ALL RIGHT. HE HAS MADE HIS PLACE SECURE BUT HE NEEDS MORE ADEQUATE SUPPORT.
