CIVIL SERVANTS DEFEAT STRONG H.K.C.C. TEAM IN "B" DIVISION

THRILLING

BOWLS

WITNESSED

A. M. HOLLAND'S CLOSE SHAVE AGAINST FARREL MATCH DECIDED ON LAST HEAD (By "Skip")

FOR the second time in this year's Lawn Bowls Singles Championship, A. M. Holland secured his entry into the succeeding round by a single shot. The first occasion was when he defeated A. W. Grimmitt, the holder, in the First Round of the competition, while yesterday_he beat P. T. Farrell by 21 shots to 20 on the Re- creio green after the latter had maintained the lead throughout the game.

Farrell rose to astounding heights yesterday, drawing in through ports and getting the shot when it seemed almost im~ possible to score, and driving with an accuracy that was amaz- ing. He gave his opponent a far better game than did Grim- mitt: only missed winning the game by a matter of inches.

THE GREEN WAS IN GOOD CONDITION, NOTWITHSTANDING THE HEAVY RAINS OF THE PAST FEW DAYS, AND THE BOWLS REACTED PERFECTLY. HOLLAND WAS INCLINED TO TAKE TOO MUCH GREEN, BUT, APART FROM THIS FAULT, WHICH HE RE MEDIED HE PLAYED A GOOD GAME.

Vic Ghezzi, centre, who rates right up behind the top-notchers, was also in the betting. SOME fairly good tennis was witnessed at the Valley yesterday, when the Civil Service Cricket Club surprisingly defeated a strong. " Hong Kong Cricket Club combination by 61⁄2 sets to 22 in their "B" Division League Lawn. Tennis encounter.

The Civil Servants made several changes in their partner- ships, Agafaroff pairing with Daley, while Valentine partnered Bendall in the absence of G. Fowler.

THE VISITORS, WHO HAD A FAIRLY STRONG SIDE OUT. WERE, HOWEVER, BADLY TROUBLED BY THE GLARE AND BY *THE UNSATISFACTORY CONDITION OF THE TURF.

Shute and Barrow were again,

the mainstay of the Civil Ser
