Ten years ago the dominant call in aeroplane development was for safety: wing sluts answered that call. To-day the do minant call is for speed: wing slots, in their latest forms, are also able to answer that call. At both of these decisive stages in world aeronautical progress, wing slots have been able to furnish exactly the quality sought first by designers, builders and opera- turs of all kinds of aircraft.~.

Fatal accidents, the vast majority of them being of the stall and spin or incipient spin type, were terribly common in avia- tion ten years ago. They were so common that the lay public was beginning to gain the impression that flying was foolhardy. In the British Royal Air Force the accidents' rate was such that, although the strength was less than 700 first line aero- planes, between 70 and 80 deaths through flying accidents were (occurring each year. In 1926 the record figure of 85 deaths was reached. Yet last year, 1934, with the Royal Air Force in- creased from 61 to approximately 93 squadrons, only 28 deaths occurred in firing accidents.
