Bonnet And Bride

E read that the Hon. Joan was the

WMarjoribanks

Erst bride of 1935 to be mar- ried in a bonnet-in London. that is. How very intriguing. And we reflect that it is nearly bonnet $0 years since the

passed out of favour, and then it had attained a size so pre- posterous AN. to become ludicrous.

It is amusing to recall that the bonnet was first worn in England by men, and is, of course, the here- ditary headgear of the Highlander. At the dawn of English history, in Anglo-Saxon times, the women Were content merely to cover the head and neck with a wimple and veil which was usually named the headcloth or kerchief, and... was made of silk or linen according to the social position, of the wearer.

Queen Margaret wife of Henry- VI. is represented in an ancient . tapestry in St Mary's Hall, Coventry, wearing a bonnet. lo the fifteenth century women came into their own, and extravagant headdresses and häirdressing in the most unbecoming and remark- able styles became the

Yogue. Hairgathered up into harms or a gold caul. barrel-ended head- dresses and tower or steeple-like fool's caps to which a flowing veil was attached were worn.

In the history of fashion, a little bonnet tied under the chin, the sort of thing that anyone wouki- recognise, first makes its appear- ance during the reigns of George I and II

It is difficult to sag exactly when veils for brides became the vozae. but the traditions associat- ed with the customary white veil are of very long standing.

The poke bonnet now arrives upon the scene, for in 1798 it was first worn in London, while in Hamburg a moted actress. Demo:- sele. Mees, came upon the stage in a coal-scuttle bonnet. Antagonists. of this style declared that those who

these monstrosities could neither see nor hear.

Bonnets were made of straw and "drawn tulle, or light felt. trimmed with upright flowers or waving feathers, the whole being covered with a large veil

wore

Kate Greenaway's charming illas- trations have led us to associate demureness and simplicity with the wearing of the bonnet. The verses extolling the virtues af gentle and modest behaviour which accompany these paintings have doubtless made the people of our generation oblivious to the fact that this form of bead covering was ever anything but simple and demure. Perhaps that is why a bride of 1935 has chosen to be mazzied in a bonnet.

BEAUTY DIARY

THE wizard wields the wand

and ugly ducklings are, transformed into swans. Now why is it that the average wo- man usually thinks of beauty in beauty in terms of her 5 x S face? She will spend hours dabbling with it but will seldom spend a minute * beautify the rest of her body which represents 2.440 square inches, more or less. of skin. space. Of course face beauty how is, most prominent-but about the neck, the arms, the back? Well, how about it?

The Arms

Undoubtedly you have *pert many an hour in making your hands as white as an angel's- but whatever you 'de for your hands, you should do as much as possible for your arms, and especially for the elbows. A skin freshener after washing, a food cream at night and careful make-up. when you go out carry the good work right on up!

If the arm flakes with bits of dried skin that sometimes appear there and nowhere else, the way to attack this is so smooth on the cream before going to bed and let it stay on all night, bows that are calloused and discoloured can be lightened with a bleaching solu- tion. Apply this before the eream, for any kind of oil will nullify its

The Magic Wand Of Make-Up

The Neck

Arms are only half the battle. Another and very important step concerns your neek and that little V-shaped area on your chest zööve the neckline of your dress, that always manages to get terribly weather beaten.

So, when you indulge in your all-around beauty treatments, be sure to include this vizil and high- ly conspicuous portion of the anatomy. If this area is dark or discoloured, bleaching treatments twice-a-week are entirely in order. A crepey neck calls for vigornus massage with a skin food.

The Back

Oddly enough, not one woman in a hundred ever thinks of ber back in spite of the fact that this is one of her most conspicuocs features in an evening gown and one which, if beautiful, always calis forth paeans of praise from the male of the species.

If you intend to tackle this back treatment at home and can't coerce an obliging maid or husband to help you, you should get a long- handled brush and use it vigorous-

ly to increase the cir culation. A few such treatments will give à velvety smooth

the back you turn to the world.

Incidentally it might be mentioned that it's no longer the thing to powder the back. neck and arms in the eve- ning, now that we have lotions instead. Some women don't seem to know it get--and you know how messy #t escorts and

Is your neck graceful? To ensure 2 graceful neck, the head must be carried well back, but with- out conscious strain. This not only gives poise, but ensures firm and plastie muscles. As a matter of fact, it is far more comfortable to hold the head well than to let the muscles of the neck sag. If you have fallen into ungaly habits practice these two neck exercises:

Thrust the head backwards till the muscles of the throat feel tight.

Then bring the head back to an upright position. Repeat several times slowly and evenly. This not only makes the Deck supple and of good contour, but benefits and stimulates certain

nerves.

open mouth will relax the facial muscles.

Then here is an exercise that will improve the too-thin arms:- Stand erect, arms at sides. Ex- tend the arms on a level with the shockders, palms uppermost. Clench the fists and slowly bring them to the shoulders. Return to first position. Repeat ten times.

Now for the revelations of the long mirror. Does it show a thick waist, spread hips, unruly dia- phragm? If it does then the daily dozen are indicated.

A chair so placed that it will-support the head midway will help till proficiency is acquired. Repeat ten times, returning, to original position after backward bend.

to which it is attached. First of all, a good-sized raised flower box was built in front of *the window. Then a set of four of the new detached divan units was used to form a corner divan. These are upholstered in beige

leather, piped in dark brown leather, harmonising with the floor, which is made up in squares of the new seamless carpeting in wal- nut brown, beige, apricot and copper. Covering the wall over the divan is a hand-coloured photo-mural enlargement of a print showing an early balloon ascension. A metal trough open only at the top supplies indirect lighting.
