Chief of these is to- mato juice, which even when canned retains a large amount of this vitamin. and hence if given in a little larger amounts" may be used as an alternate or a' qubstitute for orange juice. A third substance more recent- ly made available for this pur- pose is the canned juice of selected well-ripened pine- apples without the addition of sugar which is, now specially prepared and recommended for child feeding.

general principle has been that of making strained or pureed forms of the foods used. This is because the infant cannot be counted upoz to chew such food, and because, if swallowed in lamps, digestive disturbances may result. More- over the full benefit of the nutri- tive elements is not received when such lumps of solid food" pass through the alimentary tract" in an undigested form,

These well-known facts have led to the development of the pre- paration of special products for infant feeding canned forms.

The commON attribute of such foods is - that they have been reduced by various mechanical processes to a very finely divided and uniform texture which variously designated as strained or pureed

As the result of such improved methods of preparing the foods. it has been found that babies not only can tolerate, but are unques- tionably benefited, by such supple- mental feeding of natural iron and vitamin containing foods prisingly early ages.

But coarse whole, grain, containing the targe bran fakes, 'was generally opposed by doctors because of the distur- bance in digestion caused by these mechanically coarse particles.

This baffing problem has now been solved by the use of whole- grain cereal especially processed until it is as fine in texture as the refined cereal product from which the mineral and vitamin bearing bran and
