Modern Feeding For The Baby
PROBABLY there is
no
branch of medical science
in which more satisfactory pro- gress has been made in recant years than in the feeding of babies. Certainly the proper- tion of human lives now saved, as compared with former times. is greater in the case of babies than in the case of adults. Many causes have contributed to this gratifying decline of the infant death rate, but no
one
im- factor has been so portant as has the raw knew.. ledge of nutrition applied to in- fant feeding.
Many of these, applications of modern scientific knowledge to infant feeding apply quite as fully and are nearly as beneficial in the case of breast-fed as in the case of bottle-fed babies. The problem. of the non-milk foods at weaning im- time may indeed be more portant in the case of the breast- fed infant because of the greater change in its diet at that time than would be the case of the baby al- ready being fed on cows milk.
"It should be clearly understood, of this sup- however, that none plemental feeding is in any way a substitute for milk, but in all cases it is a supplement. Trying to ind some other main food than milk for babies takes us back rather to the dark ages of nutrition and the murderous effects of the substitu tion of starch paste for milk m the patent infant foods of those day's.

Start with this exercise. It.fills the lungs with fresh air and gives the blood-stream a new supply of oxygen.
Exercise 2-Sit on the floor and bring knees up to the chest. Lock your hands under your knees and rock back and forth as though you were in a rocking chaiz. Repeat 25 times.
Exercise 3.-This is a real hoia hala exercise! - Stand with your feet frm about tight inches apart and fold your arms ACTORS YOUT chest Move your abdomen to the right in a circle about 25 times, then to the left, keeping upper body rigid.

The fundamental changes, in baby feeding belonging to the strictly modern development of nutritional science are for the most part associated with specific nutritional discoveries, and part- cularly with the vitamins. The old- est and best known and most fully appreciated applications are the use of cod-liver oil for vitamin D and of orange juice and tomato juice for vitamin C.

Thus we had the fear of disease as a powerful' motive to enforce 3 revolutionary change of thought and of practice and the adoption of the general belief that infants should be provided with additional" -specific food substances not sup- plied in sufficient quantity or with suficient certainly by the milk. This statement applies whether the milk be from the mother's breast or in the form of cows' milk modi- fed to imitate the mother's milk.
We need not here elaborate the discussion of vitamins D and C. They have both had a vast amount of publicity. The use of cod- Iver oil orange, juice and tomato. juice in infant feeding are still im- portam and have not been super- seded. The original use has rather been elaborated and the procedure varied.
c cod-- The essential vitamin liver oil is now to be had from several souZTÉS and in several forms. It is the sunshine vitamin: If adequate year-round sun bath- ing for babies were practical. which it would be only in the most favourable climates.
