Line arrangements are the most difficult to handle. Few Lowers are used and these must be placed with consummate balance or your arrangement will fall apart or tip over-not actually perhaps, but from

the standpoint of design. "The. best principle to. keep in mind in a line Arrange ment is to allow one branch stem to become the theme for your composition. You will naturalis select one that has an interest ing form-one with a lovely curve, perhaps. This will be your tallest Sower and if you keep the tip of this stem directly over its base you will achieve a true balance. Make the base of your composition strong, with the stems rising in strong lines from, a central source. So many line arrangements lack stability and seem to fall apart because this feeling of stability at the base is lacking. All of your other lines should be sub- servient to the main line or theme and should not, cross.

Bold and vivid contrasts, strong and beautiful lines, take,"pre cedence over prettiness in modern Hower arrangements.

The day is surely coming when the department store will provide a restyling service for their clients: - Instead of buying a lipstick here," - a permanent wave there, and a. dress in some other department, the shopper will first go to the restyling expert. He will look at her in the same objective way that *- the designers of Hollywood look at the stars in which their studios have invested money. There will be no question of what the woman herself thinks of ber type. Nine times out of ten we women do not.. know what our essential type is, or could be.

The Hollywood restyler looks at his subject with the impersonal cye of an interior decorator look- ing at a house which needs to be dcne over. The suggestion is for women, thousands of whom, the country over, could be as lovely as the stars, to adopt this impersonal attitude, draw up their own blne prints and set about restyling themselves.

Here are some observations that may serve as ones..

Lene Dunne, formerly every- thinga, weil bred Park Avenue matron should be, is being restyled by a well-known. Hollywood expert who has a cool lack of regard for the way the stars themselves might choose to dress. He be- Deves that Miss Duane could carry of a much more dashing type of dress. So, in a Ponce de Leon role. he is perting Miss Duane into slender, clinging things of striking cut that are much younger in effect. From this one in- stance of restyling, one can learn - that straight lines are better than the bias cut with hips that are not streamline thing that fufiness should be concentrated around the face only, and that dull surface materials that do not catch the lights are best. Soft wools are better than shiny satins. Hard, electric colours, too, should be avoided

Carole Lombard, recently shot to "best dressed" fame, had a "broad- shouldered problem with which to cope. Her restyling has succeeded in making her shoulders an asset. If you are the broad-shouldered. ultra thin type, notice how Carole Lombard appears only in materials with plenty of texture interest. Sports clothes are of the dare-devil sort, not the formally tailored type. She' utilises corduroys, peasant linen, jolly tweeds, with plenty of colour contrast to break up a tall, thin surface. The evening frocks have bulk, too; stiff grosgrains and 30 on The silhouette is built out. at the hips, peg-top fashion, to offset the broad shoulders. High- in-front necklines or neck drapery take care of a boniness at the throat sometimes noted in this type. A square neckline. with broad, shoulder straps, may be adopted.
