Probably this may be partly ac- counted for by the rush-and-tum- Ele of modern life. There is little time to sit down and collect our thoughts before putting them on paper.

In bygone days people passed their days in a leisurely and placid way; hence the fine heritage of letters.

However, it an Art which might well be cultivated evez in these strenuous time. Just try putting yourself in the place of say a person exiled in a far-of land With what anticipation they await the postman's visit. They simply long for letters of any kind. (either well badly written) from

the folks at home. There is no need to imagine they must be writ- ten in a grand style-no, a'charty note with lots of little intimate touches is sometimes even better appreciated.

I have heard quite a few young married women say that they never get anything from the postman but circalars and bills.

Nevertheless, it is a fact that these same young matrons would still like to feel that they are in touch with the goings-013 in their
