fresh-water salmon and the moun- tain goat! Both have been studied and catalogued to exhaustion for. the benefit of the sportsman. Yet. with posterity at stake, nothing has been done with the e b
A single man is a dinner part- mer, but a single woman is just an- other nuisance, any experienced » hostess will tell you. There never yet has been a civilisation in which there were enough charming, un- married and male dinner partners. If the eligible bachelor ever dines at home, it's because he is a born' liar or else has left the telephone receiver of the hook and refused to open his mail for two weeks on end.
There is nothing shy or retirm about the e.b. With few excep- tions they like their names and pictures
the paper.
No matter what manna tells you to the contrary, the eligible bache- lor Kikes his women chic, sophis- ticated and beautifully groomed.
you are well-bred, and bay- the requisite table manners, his mother may be your strongest ally. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, she is no silverchord proposition. She's eager to see him married and out of what is euphemistically, known as mischief You can be certain mater. is a smart middle- aged woman still as firm of face 23 of mind. She looks like a cover of Vogue and sounds like an na- expurgated Noel Coward.
So, if mama likes you, approves your background and thinks you worthy to produce a son to carry- on the line, don't expect interfer- enice. She'll deliver her preciem. son on a platter.
There is one last word of en couragement. Never, never forget that while all bachelors are bora. eventually the overwhelming ma- jority are also made.

and for the sensible woman who mast break bread with these, there are hats that are possible. These are the hats with brims that wave and crisp over the fore- head, but that are not too sweet to go with efficiency.
Toques that have round crowns and brims like a spare tyre are being shown in shiny Straws.
But, a word of warning, when you select your straw hat remember it can't be too shiny. And just a word about bonnets. They are for the young, the serene-browed.. Or the Madonna-faced Other- wise they should be avoided.
A few suggestions as to what to look out for now that the hat position is really establishing self might be helpful

For morning, anything in the Homburg line-which means tailored hat which dips down front and back; a sailor hat with a small brim turned up abruptly at the edge; or 3 moderately. brimmed hat with a contrasting, rather shallow crown.
For afternoon, bonnets (if you can wear them), sometimes with a round bent-back brim, some times with a brim which is cut off square; little toques; or small hats with unusual brims, with or without a veil or original looking- trimming
The cotton, carnival of colours and textures-tricky new weaves and bright clear tones-is going strong.
Cotton creations cover the hours of the day and night, from the -perky, cheerful house dresses made like tailored street models to the wishing, crisp cottons that dance out under sumber *1000- light or on clubhouse verandas. Cottons this spring look quite a bit different from former seasons' SECCESSES. Cotton weavers go in

for textures this time, and "the results are the cottons that look like serge, the pebbled staff like pebbled silk, the crinkled, barklike roughness reminiscent of wrinkled woollen materials, and the thick, homespun effects.
Coarse, hand-span linens prob- abiy will make more suits and coat dresses this summer than ever before. You can buy them in stripes, checks, plaids, and solid
colours.
Printed linens are lovelier than ever. Most of the designs are smail and concise. Backgrounds are vivid or pastel as you choose, and rough weaves are a new as the old smoothies were last year.
Blistered
cottons crepe-y make lovely daytime dresses for street and afternoon wear, with some of the pastel shades. Dotted swisses, cross-barred with light -colours over dark backgrounds
and then peppered with tiny dots, are another new idea. Floral patterned cottons, from the tiny Kate Greenaway designs to the damboyant tropical blooms giddi- ly splashed against scarlet, blue, green, OT brown backgrounds, fashion strictly summer outfits from dainty afternoon frocks to the spectacular beach pyjamas and Tahitian outfits of skirt, "bra" and shorts.
Sheer cottons are delightful surprises. Thin, white fabrics for. picturesque, dance and even- ing gowns, crisp sheers for after noon and party dresses in all the pastels, and high colours in trans parent tissues, ginghams, organ- ..dies, and mousseline de soie Cotton nets will be better than last year; -cotton lace also stages: a return engagement. Ginghams, thin without being transparent. come in grand new colours and colour combinations.
