“GOOD FRIDAY" AT CATHEDRAL
JOHN MASEFIELD'S
PLAY
PART OF SPECIAL EVENING
SERVICES
For the first time, a Passion Play is being given this year in St. John's Cathedral A. per formance of John Masefield's Play "Good Friday" will form? part of special evening services this week on Wednesday and Thursday at 9 p.m.
John Masefield was made the Poot Laureate in 1930. In addition to his "Good Friday," he is also well known for his writings of the sea. The play to be given in the Catha- dral is included in his book of Col- lected Poems, which was first pu blished in 1928.
The scene of the play is the par-. ed court outside the Roman Citadel in Jerusalem. At the beginning. Pl- late, the Roman Governor, informa Longinus, the Centurion, that the normal custom, by which one prison- or annually was set free at the time of the Feast of the Passover, would be observed and that the mob had chosen the convict Barabbas. Jesus is already a prisoner, but Pilate in- forms the Chief Priest that he is unable to find Him guilty of the charges. of sedition and blasphemy. The Play goes on to relate the story of Gospels, of how Pilate succumbs to the insidious words of the Chief Priest and sentences Jesus to be crucified.
Jesus is crucified. One called "Madman," madman in the eyes of the world of that time, in contrast with the confusion of the fickle crowd, shows that he has seen the true vision of the life of Jesus and His crucifixion...
