ARTISTIC

FURNISHING

OUR RANGE OF ART SILKS AND CRETONNES IS BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER.

By A. S. Konya

NAKE a room, add a few windows with a sunny ex- posure and looking onto a far view, add a tiled.' fireplace, shining brassware and a few large logs.

Drop in, one by one, a dozen side chairs and two or three easy ones, also a settee. Bring in some potted flowers and ferns and quan- tities of porcelain. Mix a certain amount of good panelling and pale paint, generous number of pie- tures and Japanese prints; enliven with silk lampshades, wax candles and spice with a little blackwood.

And this is the usual old-fashion- ed recipe for a living-room. There are many others equally delightful. to their concocters, because to the layman the considerations that the architect or decorator weighs in laying out his scheme, are more or less a mystery. The whole matter becomes more interesting with the realisation that the dimensions of the windows, doorways, fireplaces; and the materials, employed are not a mere maiter of whim, but are primarily controlled by considera- tions of composition, creating a room of which cach part has its function and must be given its due degree of importance.

Rooms should be arranged first of all with a view to their practical. use. At the outrel, one must keep in mind the following deciding factors:

(1) The requirement of the occu- pants (the size of the family. whether one entertains seldom or often, etc.)..

(2) The size of the existing

rooma.

(3). The amount one can spend.

(4) The most practical type of furniture for its intended purpose.

The importance of these points will be clear to everyone. The first point will decide the number of chairs required, the afze of dinifig- room table, number and size of wardrobes, china-and linen-cup- boards etc.

The second point hus great im- portance, especially where the space is limited. You must have all the necessary furniture without allowing your house to look like a furniture show. The harmonious composition of your rooms depends, to a great extent, on the proper consideration of this point.

The third point is vital. You might make the mistake of getting an expensive crystal chandelier and not having enough to spend on up- holstery. With economical plan- ning you can have the comfort of a refrigerator end modern Altings. Still you can have an article and good upholstery. Artistry is not necessarily expensive.

And now to the last point. Fur- niture has a utilitarian purpose; therefore it must be selected to

most fulfil that purpose in the practical way, at the least expense of space and money.

A house interior, besides Its prac- tical purpose, is An expres- sion of the personality of the owner, the traditions of his race and nation, of moods and philoso- phies and social relations. Com- position In design serves the same purpose as rhetoric in language, namely, to secure force, clearness, ease and beauty. To any form of Ruccessful self-expression one needs a certain amount of ability.
