A charming wedding was 80- lemnised yesterday at St. John's Cathedral, when Lieut. Richard Dyer, R.N., was married to Misa Elfrida Annie. Tuxford, the Rev. R. E. Royue, of HIM.S. Modway, and the Rev. H. W. Baines officiating.

The bride fa the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tuxford of Shanghai, while Lieut. Dyer, is 'the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dyer of Chelwood Gate. Sussex, England.

The bride's train-bearers were Jennifer Tetley and John Hole, while Miss Joyce Harris Walker was the only bridesmaid.

POLISH EXHIBITION SHIP COMING

Expected To Arrive On Tuesday

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR SEVERAL DAYS

A Polish exhibition ship, the 8.5. Dardanus, chartered by the Polish Government from the Blue Funnel Line on behalf of the Polish Export Institute, left Gdynia (the Polish port on the Baltlo) on March 17on her way to the Far East, calls be ing arranged at Rotterdam, Suez Canal, Penang, Singapore, Port Swettenham, Hong Kong, Shanghat, Dairen, Kobe and Yokohama.

The purpose of the voyage is to display industrial and food pro ducts produced in Poland, and all local firms and the general publie in the ports of call will be cordially invited to visit the ship and to ask for any information they may wish to have concerning the manufac turers and marketing agencies of the products which will be die played on board.

The Dardanus is expected fo arrive in Hong Kong on Tuesday next and will stay here for several days in order to give everyone in- terested an opportunity of inspect- ing the different articles of Polish manufacture, which will include tip products, agricultural machinery, tissue paper, textiles, by-products of honey, wax, paraffin, etc., preserved ham, sausages, preserved musk- products, asbestos, clay products, wrought. iron, wire, pipes, galvanized Iron, steel and many others.

An ambitious scheme for the complete, eradication of illiteracy in the country within a period of three years has been formulat ed by the Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang and referred to the Central Poli tical Council for approval and action. S

According to statistics compil- ed by the Central Party Head- quarters, China at present has a population of 436,094,958 people, of whom only 87,218,990 are educated, while the remaining 848,875,968 are illiterate. Be- sides children under the age of 16, the deaf and dumb and those suffering from mental weakness; [there are 202,435,277 persons sound in body and mind who should be educated and made literate MARIN

The plan calls for the training of these 202,435,277 men and women to enable them to read and write 1,000 familar and use- ful Chinese characters within a (period of three years.
