THE VERANDAH (by A. S. Konya)
I'
is surprising that in this elimate 80 few people realise the wide range of passi bilities offered by the veran- dah: its decorative qualities are inexhaustible.
The watchword of the new archi- tectural era is air ar sunshine. The first modern houses built con- tained large platoglass windows in the living-room or the sunroun looking onto the verandah, with ' succulents and flowers arranged in the windows to lend an outdoor #tmosphere, to the room. Bul. as modern architecture has gradually come into its own, the plateglass window hus given place to large slading doors which can be sunk. into the four. When these glass doors are só removed the living- 1rom becomes part of the verandah. st. that in good weather the fumlly all
is practically out of doors the time. Meals are served on the verandah. That this is a pleasant nabit is confirmed by the enthu siasm of travellers who
return
from Vientia, and Germany and speak at well of the open-air restaurants in those countries, One cannot imagine a mare plea.. sant way of starting one's diny than by having, breakfast outside in the fresh air.
The verandah, being so exten- sively used, is naturally entitled to individual consideration in the furnishing and decoration of the house. The treatment of the walls depends largely on the architecture of the house and the treatment of the exterior walls. The verandah, being open, must be considered us part of the exterior. However, in- the architectural design, the veran- dah can be separated from the ex- terior, and in that case its walls can be treated with some decorative material like plastic paint, files, glazed bricks, sgraphito, etc. Many
!!! of us are tired of the verandal polished cement floor. Instead, one can use a variety of materials like magnesiuia composition sup plied in slabs obtainable in a great variety of colours. These slabs can be laid in many different patterns either monochrome or polychrome. In Europe, slabs of glazed brick laid out in flagstone manner are in
די
great favour. With coloured or painted cement flooring a pleasant effect can be obtained.
There are two ways of treating- the verandah, either as a sort of balcony to the living quarters, or as a connecting link between the rooms and the gardens. The latter is more correct, especially where the garden is small. Therefore ane can place the more delicate potted plants and a wall-fountain on the verandah us appropriate de corations,

In furnishing the veramah, there seems to be a definite, eonviction that only rattan furniture is appro priate In the modern house there is.n vogue for furniture constructed of light woods and lacquered in brilliant colour. Chromium plated or lacquered' steel furniture is also popular. I find the latter very suitable. The frames are very light and on the seat and back a «trong linen ur horsehair can be stretched. The same material may he used for awnings or curtains on the windows which open on the. verandah, A very pleasant type of verandah furnishing comes from America. This is made of willow cane in the most modern designe und sally lacquered poly-
brome.
