Devil-Bird Vengeance
(Continued From Page #)
The girl ran, catching her ragged blanket round her. The villagers,. clustered round the pilot who had been dragked from his machine and shot by Bu Maza, did not see the
girl pass...
She found the machine. It had come down cleanly on the ́sund, and did not look damaged. Panting with eagerness, the girl clambered into the ecckpit, fingering the con- 'trols feverishly.
Now she remembered. She had been flying across Africa; her ma chine had crashed; she had man- aged to crawl away from the wreck- age; after that. nothing. Bu Maza had found her, robbed and abondon- ed her. Her face #ushed as she recalled his evil triumph.
But now she need not fear him. She could get away, fly back to Europe. If the plane were un- damaged.... Then she saw patrol gauge. Empty!

Anight she cowered in the 'plane, in fear Bu Maza. She had cast off the althy blanket which had been her only covering for weeks, and was wearing a heavy coat she had found in the machine. Perhaps the French would send other machines to look for this one. Fear and hope kept her awake. She huddled closer into the cockpit, waiting for the dawn.
Before the first streak of light, the draning of several heavy 'planes eamo to her from the north.
And then the bombs began to fall; the air was tortured with noise. They were giving. Bu Maza and his tribe: the punishment they deserved for defying their author- ity.

Terrified, the girl etched in tho cockpit. Once, a shower of sand fell upon her, thrown up by a ter rifying explosion' which seemed to shatter the world. A single sob escaped_her_
Day broke at last, and the pani- tive squadron lunded, one by one,, flinging up clouds of dust as they came to a standstill. Over, the stretch of sand the girl watched. They hart machine guns ready now but no attack came.
Some of the men. from the squadron had noticed the machine, aid came running. They plied her with questions; she told them all she knew, begged them to take her.
