DURING THE TIFFIN INTERVAL AT THE RACES TO- DAY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR PRESENTED, ON BEHALF OF THE STEWARDS AND OFFICIALS OF THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB, THE HON. MR. C. GORDON MACKIE WITH A SILVER SALVER, A SILVER COFFEE SET, AND A SILVER CIGARETTE CASE AS A MARK OF AP PRECIATION FOR THE UNTIRING SERVICES HE HAD REN- DERED TO LOCAL RACING IN THE COLONY. THIS IS THE LAST ANNUAL RACE MEETING THE HON. MR. MACKIE WILL ATTEND, AS HE IS LEAVING FOR HOME THIS YEAR. His Excellency, during a brief speech, pointed out that the Hon. Mr. Mackle had been a Steward of the Club for the past 24 years and Chairman of the Stewards for the past seven years. He had always shown the keenest itlerest, hardly ever missing the early morning training gallops. The Hon. Mr. Mackle suitably re- plied, saying that racing in Hong Kong was now of a much higher, standard than ever before, and that in no place in the world was cleaner sport to be found.

A second presentation was made when Miss Mackie present-

ed the Ladies' Purse to Mr. S. Y. Sun, the Shanghai rider, follow- ing his win on Mr. Li Shiu Pang's Soldier of Britain.

CONFIDENT OF THE FUTURE

Ninety years! It is a long time 20 years more than the span of life allotted to man by the Psalmist; and the "China. Mail," which cele- brates its ninetieth anniver- sary to-day, may perhaps be.... allowed a little self-satisfac tion at the fact. ·

There are few, if any, in Hong Kong to-day who were alive when the "China. Mail" first saw the light; certain it is that there is none alive to- day who remembers its birth; 90 years ago, is still in its but the paper that was born

vigorous manhood, despite its age, and hopes to continue its service to the public of the Colony for many years yet to come. It is but a mere 10 years to the celebration of its centenary; and what is 10 years to the 90 years that has already weathered?

So to-day the "China Mail

looks forward with confidence to the future, sure that it will receive from the public the support which it feels it has earned by its long years of service. !

The many letters of con- gratulation and good wishes that have been received dur- ing the past week give reason to believe that that support will not be lacking.
