HOWELL"
BID DEFINED
by Elý Culberinom.
In Duplicate games which are scored on a match-point basis quito frequently the movement used is that devised by Howell. For this resson a great many. Duplicate Players, including myself, errone ously use the term "Howell" in speaking of almost anything having to do with the match-point method of scoring, In fact, the use of the word "Howell" in this sense has become almost universal. Players speak not only of Howell games but of Howell bids and plays. -*-
A Howell bid or play, is a bid or play which is made only because) the player realises that the game is being scored on a match-point basis, and therefore is one which would not always be made in an ordinary rubber Bridge game.
An example of a Howeil bid occurs in the hand below:

Should Women dread the approach of a perfectly natural event?
Nunduly. Why is it then that so many
CATURE never intended you to suffer
thousands of women experience such pain and weakness
Simply because there is a shortage of vital minerals in the body.
That is the reply, supported by the best medical opinion. Calcium is the vital food of every body cell, and any shortage hinders the correct performance of all bodily functions," particularly those of women
The use of Kalzana, the mineral food, for a few weeks provides the whole system with the indispensable minerals needed to establish that care-free, vigorous health that Nature intended you to enjoy. -
But it must be Kalzana, as only in this scientific form (a combination of sodium- lactate and calcium-lactate) will the mineral salts be taken up and retained by your body. Lose your dread—re-establish the functions on a normal basis by starting a course of Kalzann to-day.
