NEW TERRITORIES PRODUCE

[To the Editor, “Chlox Mail".)

Sir-In the summer of last year] a great deal of attention was fo- cussed in the New Territories of Hong Kong through questions in the Legislative Council and correspon- dence and leading articles in the Press, culminating in the appoint- ment of a Committee by His Excel- lency the Governor to go into the question of pig breeding and poul. try rearing in the Territories. There subsequently appeared a report of the Committee which, disappoint- ingly, aroused hardly any comment from the general public with the notable exception of one section of the Press.

The inertia thus exhibited by the public is no new feature of the In- terest in public affairs taken by the community.

But somehow life itself seemed particularly amused or annoyed at the audacity of anyone who had anything to do with the superlative mood,

At least it appeared so, to John Best, for no sooner did he seem to approach-anywhere near his high fdeal than his little world about: hie' ears.

The dwindling numbers of Euro- peans attending the New Territories Annual Agricultural Show.at its opening on Saturday is yet another evidence of the apathy of the local community.
