KIDNAPPING IN COLONY
Portuguese Boy Taken From Residence.
POLICE EFFECT RELEASE
Smart Police work resulted in the recovery of a six-year-old Pór-! tuguese boy, Luigi Ribeiro, son of Mr. L. G. Ribeiro, of No. 7 Hanoi Road, Kowloon, who was kidnap- ped for ransom, on Monday, after-
noon.
Two well-known members of the Colony's Portuguese commun- ity have been detained for enquir ies in connection with the out- rage.
A close ear was geen drawn up outside Mr. Ribeiro's residence on Monday at 5.30 p.m.. and two men entered the house and talked, to the boy, who was taken out to the car, and drove away.
a
No suspicion was cast until note was received, demanding a large sum of money for the return. of the boy. The note stated that contact with the kidnappers could be made at a well-known Chinese) Molel on the Hong Kong side. Po-| lice officers rushed to the hotel. and apprehended a man there.
Beceiving certain information from him, they then proceeded to 183 Fuk Wing Street and found the boy, frightened but unhurt. He was immediately returned to his parents and another Portuguese who was obviously guarding him was arrested.
Altogether, the boy was abяent| from his home for eight hours.

INQUEST CONCLUDES
A' verdict of manslaughter against So Sing, So Ping and San Kin-luk, was returned at the conclusion of the inquest held in-
to the circumstances surrounding the death of Wong Pak-kiu, alias) Wong Cheuk-lam, at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. Schofield sat as Coron- er and the jury comprised Messrs. H. J. Fountain (Fore- man), F. E. Silva and W. E. Broadbridge.
Deceased met his death by n fall from the verandah of the third floor of No. 157, Des Voeux Road Central, on September 9.
In summing up the case Mr. Schofield said:--
"This case is clearly one in which a man was subjected to funlawful violence and thereby
reduced to such a state of fear] that in order to escape he took his own life.
"The law on this subject is laid down in the case of, The King v. Evans, in which a man best his wife, and she threw her- self out of the window and was killed.

"He was held answerable for the consequences as much though he had thrown her out himself. Frightening a person to death seems to be manslaugh- ter at the least.
"If, therefore, you find these Inspector A. E. Carey the gave evi-
