Canton, To-day.

With the mercury at 44 de- grees this morning. Canton is in the grip of bitter weather. The cold snap is further intensified by a strong north wind. Four beggars in the Little North dis- trict were frozen to death last] night.

The poor people, such as hawkers and rickshaw coolles, are the prin- cipal sufferers. Honicless people who sleep on the side-walks at night,, have given up their sites facing north and have moved to new loca tions with ''southern exposure. The more fortunate ones secure lodgings at the public hostels below. the foot of the Pearl River Bridge, where they can spend the night by paying two coppers, or two-thirds of La cent.
