DEFENCE COUNSEL

MAKES FINAL PLEA

"REMOVE THIS

"SEND OLD MAN BACK TO THE HOME HIS SON HAS PREPARED FOR HIM"

Chicago, To-day.

A final plea for the acquittal of Samuel Insull, the former Middle- West "Utilities Tsar," and his brother, Martin Insull, on charges of fraud, was made by their coun- sel, Floyd E. Thompson, yester day.

He urged the jury to "remove this stain."

"Send this old man back to the home his son prepared for him. Send this young man back to his job and his motherless boy," he appealed.

"He said that they were caught

RUSSIAN MILITARY "OFFER" UNFOUNDED

STATEMENT REGARDED AS POLITICAL MOVE GERMANY SCOUTS "ASTRONOMICAL" FIGURES OF RE-ARMAMENT

Moscow, To-day.

Doubt exists in semi-official circles that an of fer of Russian military aid was ever made to France, as was stated by the rapporteur of the French Military Budget, M. Archimbaud, in the Chamber of Deputies, yesterday. "Russia has a solid, well-equipped army which she offers us in case of a conflict between Germany and us,” he said.-Reuter.

Absolutely no Franco-Soviet alliance or military agreement exists, a high French authority informed Reuter yesterday in Paris in reference to M. Archimbauds statement: in the Chamber of Deputies. The French Government, he said, had never accept- ed the Soviet's tentative suggestions for a military alliance to which many members of the Chamber opined M. Archimbaud re- ferred when he spoke of the Soviet "offer."

Paris, To-day. "Electricity was wandering ab over the ship at its own sweet will," declared counsel for the in- surers of the burned French liner, Atlantique, during the continued hearing yesterday of the law suit in the Appeal Court here.

It was alleged that the insula tion of certain electric cables aboard the vessel was only, for 4,000 ohms, whereas 500,000 fohms was insisted upon by. Messrs. Veritas, and 1000,000 ohms by the Germanica Lloyd firm.

It was contended that the non- disclosure of the state of the elec- tric wiring automatically annull- ed the insurance policy.
