SUPERIOR'S PERSUASION?
HUMAN story of how a man's reckless and futile attempts
to recover from his misdee da led him into further complica- tions and dishonesty, was related by Mr. Leo D'Almada e Castro, Jnr., before the Chief Justice, the Hon. Mr. A. D. A. MacGregor, at the Criminal Sessions, Supreme Court, this morning, in his plea of mitigation on behalf of an Englishman, Geoffery Fitzgerald GII- bert, charged on three counts of the embezzlement of sums amounting to over $14,000, from Messrs. Arnhold and Company.
Mr. D'Almada also referred to the fine War record held by the accused and sought to prove that the offence was to be regard- ed as more foolish than criminal, and emancipating from tempta- tion through a channel introduced to him by another person, the accused's superior, but whose name counsel would not divulge to the Court.
The Chief Justice passed a sentence of four months" hard la- bour remarking that the shame and Ignominy which the accused would have to hear through life was to be regarded as the real punishment for his misdeeds.
