THE RED MENACE IN NORTHERN KWANGTUNG STILL EXISTS, ALTHOUGH THE FIRST SERIOUS ENCOUNTER ON MONDAY BETWEEN THE CANTONESE TROOPS AND COM- MUNIST FORCES, AT YENSHOU, ON THE HUNAN-KWANG- TUNG BORDERS, RESULTED IN A SETBACK FOR THE IN- VADERS.

About 80,000 Red troops have arrived in southern Hunan from western Klangsi and have occupied Jucheng, Kweitung, I- Chang, Lingwu, and Chengchow. All these cities have been plun», dered.

Their retreat to Szechuen is being made by three routes. The left wing will pass through northern Kwangtung, while the right wing cross over the southern Hunan. The central route between the two wings is for high officials, radio equipment, and opera- tors and archives.

So far, only the left flank has met with resistance. The right! flank and the central body have passed through a great portion of southern Hunan. No fighting. has yet occurred with the Gov-" ernment forces coming down from Hengchow.
