Lord Mayor's Show

London, To-day. Despite almost continuous rain, large crowds gathered in the streets to witness the Lord Mayor's show yesterday.

The central feature of the pro- cession, which accompanied the new Lord Mayor, Sir Stephen Killik in his famous coach attend- the Court of Justice where the oath was taken, was the pageant.

Reports from Shanghal state that the Ministry of Finance In Nanking has accepted the sugges-ed by pastillons and footmen, to tion of the Shanghai City Chamber of Commerce to suspend the issue of licenses for the transportation of rolled tobacco to Kwangtung, pend- ing "the abolition of the legal ad- ditional tax of 20 per cent. advalo- rem by the Kwangtung Provincial Government."

As a result of this stand, no tobacco has been shipped to Canton from Shanghai since, October 31.

The Canton Provincial Department

of Finance has turned down a peti- tion of the tobacco merchants asking for a cancellation of this tax.

Local merchants also petitioned to the Ministry of Finance against) this tax, but as Kwangtung is vir tually independent, nothing can be! done by the Ministry except to sus pend the tobacco licenses.
