LAWRENCE IS NOT ONLY EXPECTED TO RETAIN HIS TITLE AS 100 YARDS CHAMPION IN THE FIRST DAY OF THE OPEN COLONY'S CHAMPIONSHIPS, ORGANISED BY THE V.R.C.. BUT IS} FAVOURED TO SMASH THE 10-YEAR-OLD MARK OF 59) SECONDS DEAD, SET UP BY D. LYON IN 1924.
Lawrence's best time for the distance is 59 1/5 secs, which he established during a handicap race at a V.R.C. swimming gala early in the season.
It is a pity that the 100 Yards back-stroke event is also sche- duled to be decided to-day as Lawrence, who is but one-fifth of a secant behind the record-holder. Lan Po-hay, cannot be expected"). to offer a serious challenge in view of the effort required in the| former event. Lawrence, however, is almost certain to secure 11 place in this race.
The other championship will be Throwing the Water Polo Ball, which is being revived after a lapse of one year. T. Pagel, the Holder, will defend his title, Lawrence again being included among the challengers.
