Hanging up his fifteenth straight pitching victory when he de- feated the Boston Red Sox, Lynwood (Schoolboy) Rowe, ace of the Detroit Tigers' twirling staff, gunned unsuccessfully for his seven- teenth win to beat the American league pitching record. DECIDES TO REMAIN AT BECKHAMPTON
LOYAL TO OWNERS AND TRAINERS
(By HOTSPUR)
London, September
I understand that the champion, jockey, Gordon Richards, will next year continue to ride under a first claim for the Beckhampton stable. The important matter was arranged a little while ago, and, therefore, disposes of a report that he might be transferring his sex- vices.
1
Richards, it is understood, was offered as much as $7,000 & year, plus 10 per cent, on stakes won, on a three-years' contract, to ride for the Aga Khan. These term represent the biggest offer ever made to a jockey in the history of racing in this country.
ARSENAL ON TOP
The precise terms on which": Richards will continue to ride for Beckhampton are the private con cern of the jockey and the own- ers and trainer associated with the stable. It is sufficient to sayes that the retaining fee, I under stand, indicates an increase on what has been paid hitherto, with' the now customary 10 per cent.

VILLA SECOND FOR CUF
Arsenal, the Football League champions, are favourites to win both the the F.A. Cup and the League Championship.
A firm of West-end commis» sion agents are offering the (V.M.C.A. Bath)|| following odds on the Cup:
10-1 Arsenal 14-1 Aston Villa 161 Huddersfield 16-1 Manncheser C. 16-1 Sheffield Wed. 20-1 Derby Co. 4201 Leicester City 291 Portsmouth 1201 Toottenham H. The odds against Arenal win- ning the League are quoted at 3 to 1. The offer may appeal to out-and-out Arsenal “fans,”.... but it is as well to point that they still have thirty-nine Lea gue matches to play--and the Cup Fimal does not take place until April 27, 1934!

Second Claim··
The champion jockey has ever been most, loyal to those trainera and owners he has served for any length of time, certainly to the ex- tent of showing that money to him, is not everything. As an example of this, I may add that he has again given second claim on his services for 1935 to the Ogbourne trainer, Martin Hartigan.
I have no doubt he could have retalled his second claim at con- siderably more than is paid him by the trainer to whom belongs all the oredit of having tutored and encouraged him during his apprenticeship years,
