FRENCH CLUB ONLY TWO SETS BEHIND

Shanghai, September 6. The Japanese Tennis Club won

the

second division Tennis league title yesterday, scoring 167 sets to the 165 won by the French Club, while the Rees were third, with 162 sets.

This extremely close conclusion to the season's competition came about in the recent few weeks. when the three teams were running neck-and-neck and it was not until the final matches yesterday that the Japanese were assured of the Ititle.

The league winners owed their place to their fine victory over the Police yesterday, as they defeated the latter by 13 sets to 2.

This overwhelming win came as a surprise, for the Police at ап earlier stage in the season had been regarded as likely contestants for the top position and it was only in recent matches that they fell away. Yesterday they were yery badly beaten, but a bright spot in the re- sults was the victory of Capt. Wahl and S. V. Gash over the leading Japanese couple by 6-4, 7-5, 1-6. French Hopes

London, August 15.

A 250-miles air race from Lon- don to Newcastle on Saturday, or- ganised by the Newcastle Aero | Club, had such a variety of ma- chines entered that it had to be ran on handicap lines.

Fourteen machines started, and the race was decided on the first, to reach Newcaslo folowing a

handicap start at Brooklands.

The results were:

1. L. Lipton (Gipsy Moth), 12hrs 6min 49 sec;

2. G. E. Lowdell, (Hawker Tom. tit), 2hrs. 34 min:

3. C. S. Napier (Hendy 802), 12hrs 1min 9 sec.

The next four in order of arrival were Mr. John Kirwan (Percival Gull); Squadron Leader W. L. Run- ciman (Puss Moth); A. Henshaw (Leopard Hoth), and Miss C. R Leathart (Comper Swift).

Unfavourable Weather

The weather conditions were far from ideal. There was án lawkward cross wind of from 20 to 40 miles an hour, with visibility steadily getting worse during the

race.

There were two women compeli- tors and one of them, Miss Lea- thart, who was flying the smallest machine, was the seventh to reach Newcastle.

The handicapping was based on the assumption that the journoy would take two and a half hours. The first machine left at 1.80, and the last-a Miles Hawk, piloted by Mr. C. H. Rose-at 2.80..
