lke £60,000 would be saved by building the second ship at the same yard. On the other hand, a decl nion to that effect would cause much heart-burning on Tyneside, which had confidently reckoned on booking the order for the second leviathan.

There is a good deal of local eri- ticism regarding the secrecy which surrounds No. 584. Stories are told of mysterious foreigners who have employed every form of subterfuge to gain admission to the vessel her-i self and the shops where her ma chinery is being built. The object, no doubt, is to collect information that might enable Continental builders to improve on No. 534, though her only serious rival, the French Normandie, le understood to be too far advanced for any dras- tic modification.

In

the "hush-hush" any case, system. is still much in evidence, and as the ship is being heavily sub

it the Government aldised by can only be inferred that all this secrecy in officially considered to be in the national interest.

The estimated total cost of No. A substantial 584 is £4,500,000. part of this sum will be absorbed by the interior decorations. Some of the public apartments will be in the Adams style, while in others the decorative scheme will be Chippen- dale, Louis XVI., Renaissance of Georgian.
