For the lovely afternoons at the country summer resort, Katherine De Milte, motion picture player, chooses a peasant gown. It is of linen with white handkerchief

blouse in printed design of the Hame material. The only trim- ming is white and printed linen belt with a buckle carrying out the printed colours in the blouse.

Romantic Gowns For Summer Evenings

INVISIBLE SHOULDER STRAPS

London

The dressmakers have been putting nearly all our ideas about evening clothes into reverse, and. to confuse us further, contradict- ing themselves flatly,

There is, for instance, the de- signer who, after building up a dress in the grand manner, sud- not to add any denly decided shoulder straps. People blink when they see this gown, for it is cut low not only at the back but in the front as well. But it is held up by boning spread cun- ningly around inside the bodice, and is actually quite comfortable lo wear.

Then there is the evening suit, differing completely from that dramatic line. The skirt is given high-waisted effect which fas- tena over the blouse, and there is a prim little long-sleeved jacket in the skirt material. It is done in chiffon or lace or net, and is the sort of thing to wear for the evening which starts at a cock- tail party in town and goes on in the country or up the river.

If you like clothes that are un- common but not obvious, I should prescribe something like the dress

I saw the other evening.

An Evening Frock

Just to the waistline comes the new awester with clever puff sleeves, worn with a nonchalant white silk necker-eblef and white dannel skirt. Simply and charm- ingly, it is modelled by Muriel Evans, motion picture actress.

It was a plain, black taffeta, very rustling and feminine, with a throat-high neck in front and a GOLD ORNAMENTS IN low back decolletage, edged all round with a small frill of or- gandi. Drgandi, too, followed the

By day, the most important piece of news la the absolute disappear. ance of the square shoulder line and ́the-arrival of the new "Droop- ing" shoulders. Necks remain for

Then there are all the new and amusing bibs and plastrons of organdi, pique linen or newest of all-printed crepe. The bibs are made in every conceivable shape and size; the plastrons are some- times simple, sometimes elaborate-

Tanned Skins

Times have indeed changed since it was not considered proper to wear jewelry with sport ensem- bles-and this goes. for gold to day, which is worn extensively with the yellow metal. This, we explained, is partially due to the gold blending so well with tanned skins polished with glistening oils and the new spring fabrics of brown, orange, yellow and green- plus the tropic touches of bril liancy.

Bracelets of gold are in big de mand, Carter and Mauboussin selling auantities of them in mas alve shapes, but paradoxically light in weight. (That seems to be a trade secret which nobody is divulging). Anyway, a lot of them are worn on the outside of gloves and form temporary cuffs-they are too large to be considered un der a glove, without making tha wrist look deformed...
