An international conference on the teaching of history, the second) of its kind, has been taking place) at Basle. Although not directly, connected with the League of Na- tions, it may be looked upon as a useful prelude to the advisory committee on League teaching at Geneva a month later..

Sir John Simon recently drew attention to the danger of a new generation springing up with no first-hand knowledge of the mean- ing of modern warfare. From its earliest years the League of Na tions has realised the importance | of educating aright the boys and! girls at school.

It is now generally accepted | among educationalists that, in the old days, the emphasis was often wrongly placed in history teach- ing. A story is told of a school- boy. on being told thai the object of the Longne of Nations was to stop wars, exchiming, "Well, gir,! if the League succeeds, we shan't have any more history, shall we sir?" Certainly nowadays there is

a growing tendency to give a more liberal Interpretation of history, than merely the story of one war after another.,

in no country are the recom- mendations of the League Assem- bly in this respect being better) carried out than in Great Britain. The results are all the more re- markable in view of the fact that no attempt is made to dictate to, the oral duestion authorities.
