BUILDING BRITISH - INDUSTRY

Pineapples Flourish In Guiana.

REPEATED DISAPPOINTMENTS

Georgetown, British Guiana.

- This is the story of a promising British industry which has estab- lished itself here in the face of repeated disappointments;

Two years ago there was not a pineapple worth exporting in Bri- tish Gulana.

But there was fertile soil, a suit- able climate and-a good "potential market.

Local merchants hit by the dia- mond slump formed a company to grow and can pineapples in the colony. They ordered 100,000 plant "tops" from Hawalt.

Then came a great disappoint- ment. The "tops" arrived in Bri- tish Guiana as dry as hay and, te

ull appearances, good only for cattle food.

The company seat for a second shipment to Hawaii.

This time the answer came back: "Nothing doing." Hewall had de- cided it was bad business to rive competitors a helping hand.

Then the company applied to the French island of Martinique. Again the answer was "No."

Meanwhile, somewhat despairing- ty, the first shipment of pineapple "tops" from Hawaii had been planted in nurseries and carefully tended.

+

Many of them falled to grow. But some

flourished and put out rools. The British Gulana pinë apple canning industry was born.

To-day there are 500,000 healthy Nearly plants producing fruit. 50,000 acres of land are to be turn- ed into pineapple fields, Reuter.

A luxurious motor car that was frontier continually crossing the from Italy into Fränce at Menton for the market at Nice.. aroused the suspicions of the French customs officials.
