CHINESE OLYMPIC TEAM GIVEN BIG WELCOME 5,000 Present At Manila Wharf

Manila, To-daş. Tremendous enthusiasm was shown when a large local section of the Chinese community turned out for the arrival of the Chinese Olympic delegation and gave them

triumphat entry yesterday. At least 5,000 people jammed the pier shouting and compelling the teams to make a parade through The Manila streets, after which the athletes inspected the xladium while the officials hastened to pay Governor their respects to the General and to the Mayor.-Reu ter.

MACAO RACES ABANDONED

Insufficient Entries For Sunday

POSSIBILITY OF SUBSTITUTE MEETING

It is unfortunate that Sun- day's meeting at Macao has had to be abandoned. A very fine programme had been drawn up, and the Macao Jockey Club had anticipated --a good entry to all the events.

It is solely on account of in- sufficient entries owing to the proximity of the Fifth Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club on May 19 and 21. that this meeting had to be cancelled.

Mr. S. W. Cheng, secretary of the Macao Jockey Club, told me that several owners had come to him unofficially and stated that they would be unable to race their ponies at the two meetings, and. therefore, although they had entered for the Macao meet- ing. they would not be able to take their ponies to Macao on Sunday.

The Macao meeting takes а lot out of the ponies, the journey up and down adding

to the strain of the races.

It is possible, although nothing has been done yet. that another extra meeting st Macao may be held in June, Mr. Cheng stated.

EXHIBITIONS BY CHINESE STARS

Dependent On Stay In Colony

RECEPTION ON RETURN FROM GAMES

There is every possibility that exhibition games will be staged by the Chinese Olympic ath- letes, who left here for Manila on Sunday, on their return from the Far Eastern Games, slate officials of the Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation.

Mr. M. K. Lo, the Chairman of the Federation says that exhibitions will depend on the amount of time that northern athletes will spend in the Colony. Mr. Lu added that a reception will be prepared for China's athletes when they pass through Hong Kong on their return from the Olym- piad.

O'REILLY 11 FOR 79

London, To-day.

The Australian cricketers. under the captaincy of W. M. Woodfull, received their first check on their English tour yes- terday when Leicestershire held them to a draw after a

very plucky up-hill fight.

Commencing the day 181 be hind with nine second innings wickets in hand, Leicester were indebted to E. W. Dawson, who played a characteristic captain's nock for 91, for their lead of 47 with a wicket in hand when the game was abandoned as a draw,

O'Reilly, likely to be Aus- tralia's most dangerous bow- ler in the Tests, followed up his first innings success of 7 for 39 with 4 for 40 to give him 11 for 79 in the match. The Australians, who will meet England in the first Test at Trent Bridge, Larwood's home ground, Jon June 8, beat Worcestershire by an innings in their opening game.
