PRISON VISITORS. SEARCHED
Electric Eye At Sing Sing
LESS GUARDS NEEDED
Ossining, New York. An electrical device with which to detect knives, pistols, contraband Jand other forbidden articles on visitors, and an electric "eye" de- signed to detect prisoners who are too near the prison walls, are under consideration for use at Sing Sing penitentiary.
The electric "eye" would cast a light beam eight feet from the walls and sound a warning signal if the beam were intercepted. Warden Lawes said that it would permit him to dispense with some of the watch tower guards. The instru- ment would also be used to detect conspirators outside the walls.
The device to detect knives, and also contraband, is the size of à typewriter and could be installed in the visitors' room where the 'cus- tomary searbling now takes place. The Warden indicated that the de vices would be installed provided funds are made available.-Reuter..
