WITH US.A.

Significant Speech By Saito.

TRADE TREATY RECALLED

New York. To-day. America and Japan are destined to work together to keep the peace of the Far East, declared Mr. Hiroshi Saito, the new Japanese Am- bassador to Washington, at a luncheon here, yesterday, in commemoration of the eigh-

tieth anniversary of the sign- ing of the first Japanese- American trade treaty, in 1854.

The two main points of the treaty, he said. were, peace and amily on one hand, and commercial intercourse on the other hand. These were seen to be the keynotes of the American-Japanese friend- ship. They could afford to

smile at those who harped on the question of war between the two countries.

The exchange of goods be- tween Japan and the United States had exceeded, the greatest expectations of those signing the original treaty, he said. Reuter.
