WATER SUPPLY GIVES OUT

Walvis Bay (South West

Africa).

The successful crossing of the South West desert by a police pa- trol mounted on camels, and the hardships that attended the journey, have been revealed by the return of the patrol to Wal vis Bay.

The patrol, consisting of two sergeants, a constable, and two natives, was sent down the coast with instructions to proceed to the Conception Bay diamond fields, which have been deserted since the diamond slump, and from there to try to cut across the desert to the Kuiseb River.

The object of the patrol was to gather information regarding the possibility of the passage of this route by motor-cars carry- ing diamond thieves.

It was known that during the German regime a camel patrol disappeared while trying to take the same route. Consequently there was some anxiety over the fate of this police patrol, which Penang, Colombo, Bombay & was under the command of Ser Karachi.
