The Slam Double
Convention.
This convention originated in 1930 by Culbertson's favourita partner, Mr. Theodore Lightner, and ls as follows:
If a player who is not on lead, doubles, a alami contract (either small or grand), he tells his part: ner that he can defeat the contract if a different lead Is made from that which would otherwise ; nor-) mally be expected.
This would mean that if either {partner had” bid a suit, this should not he opened, but some other lend would set the contract. If neither partner had bid, the double would indicate that a lead of one of the suits bid by opponents was desired. The great value of this bid has Jactually been demonstrated over a period of years, mostly by obsary- ing the many hands where its employment would have defeated the contracts than from its actual result in play, as only very few people have known this convention.
