Into Sea of Matrimony at Sea

One of the most puzzling pro- blema in bidding is the question of when a player should: bid second suit if partner has parted the first. It is generally conceded that it must always 1 shown when the first wait is deni ed, as n fit has been discovered and it is essential to reach the con- tract which will please both hands the most. However, when a fit is already determined, the question of showing or concealing one's dis- tribution becomes a real problem.

Broadly speaking, there are Jonly four situations in which

new suit should be shown when the first has been supported. The first is when a game is highly doubtful and it is barely possible. that it might be made in the sec ond suit and not in the first, as, for example, when a 5-4 distribu-j tion is held and it seems prefer- Jable to try to reach a declaration in which a 4-4 combination can be played rather than a 53 OT Jeven a 5-4.
