"THE SPIDER" NOMINATES THE LEADING 1934 AUSTRALIAN PONIES

FINGLETON & RICHARDSON PASSED OVER

BATTING SOUND BUT BOWLING PRESENTS PROBLEM

(BY ATHOLE)

ONSIDERABLE SURPRISE HAS BEEN OCCASIONED BY THE CRICKETERS TO SELECTION OF THE 16 AUSTRALIAN

Co

TOUR ENGLAND THIS SUMMER. J. H. FINGLETON, THE NEW SOUTH WALES OPENING BATSMAN, AND VICTOR RICHARD- SON, THE POPULAR SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SKIPPER, ARE NOT- ABLE ABSENTEES, WHILE W. BROWN, A N. S. W. PLAYER OF A BATSMAN LITTLE EXPERIENCE, AND A. CHIPPERFIELD, UNKNOWN BUT FOR THE FACT THAT HE SCORED 152 OUT OF M.C.C. TOURISTS LAST 322 FOR NEWCASTLE AGAINST THE

YEAR, HAVE BEEN GIVEN A SURPRISE OPPORTUNITY.

Chipperfield scored 84 against Queensland recently, but that was after Bradman and Kippax had flogged the bowling all over the field.

Grimmett. Fleet-

The composition of the attack-O'Reilly, Wail, wood Smith, Ebeling and McCabe is strong, but does not offer any Lerrors. I am surprised H. Chilvers, the NS.W. googlie bowler, was not included. He has better powers of spin than Grimmett, though he le lacking experience in big cricket. H.J. Tobin and P.K. Lee would have been useful all-rounders in the side, but II. Ironmonger and R. K. Oxenham are now veterans.

The batting is very sound, but it might have been strengthened by the inclusion of Fingleton. L P. O'Brien (Victoria), and K. E. Rigg. also of Victoria. The following are pen sketches of the players.

WEEK, AND, ALTHOUGH I AM STILL OF THE OPINION THAT MESSRS. STURT AND LOBEL'S SARABANDE AND MR. SURE- TON'S BRAN.TUB ARE AMONG THE BEST AND WILL BE RIG FACTORS IN THE VALLEY STAKES, I SHOULD LIKE THIS WEEK TO DISCUSS THE CHANCES OF SOME OF THE OTHER SUBSCRIPTION GRIFFINS.

One of the' ponies which has made the most progress dur- ing the past four weeks is Cavalcade, a chestnut belonging to Mr. Leong Kwok Cheong. At one time entirely neglected by the "fans," Cavalcade has come along so well in his training that to-day he is looked upon as a potential winner of the Valleys.

Mr. Yick Chim's Young Chap is another one which has been steadily improving. This pony is an almost certain starter in the Valleys, and, although he may be crowded qut in this short race, I do not hesi- tate to make the prediction that he will be one of the favourites for the Sports Club Cup over 11⁄2 miles.
