Appalling loss of life and wide- spread damage to property are re- ported from Bibar and Orissa and the Bengal Provinces of India as the result of the severe earthquake shocks which occurred on Monday.

Deaths have been heaviest in Manghyr and Mizzaffarpur, in the Ganges Valley, which, according to press reports, have been razed to the ground.

Owing to the havoc Wrought| by the earthquake, communica- tions with the affected areas ure completely dislocated and the re- ports of the number killed and in- jured must be accepted with re-
